Mini Grilled Cheese Hawaiian Rolls (Printable)

Golden Hawaiian rolls filled with melted cheddar and mozzarella, brushed with garlic-parsley butter.

# What You Need:

→ Bread & Cheese

01 - 1 package (12-count) Hawaiian sweet rolls
02 - 8 oz sharp cheddar cheese, thinly sliced
03 - 4 oz whole milk mozzarella cheese, thinly sliced

→ Butter Spread

04 - 4 tbsp unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
05 - 1/2 tsp garlic powder
06 - 1 tbsp fresh flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

# Steps:

01 - Preheat oven to 350°F or set a large skillet or griddle over medium heat.
02 - Using a serrated knife, slice the entire block of Hawaiian rolls in half horizontally without separating individual rolls. Place the bottom half on a baking sheet or cutting board.
03 - Distribute cheddar and mozzarella cheese slices evenly across the bottom half of the rolls, covering the entire surface. Place the top half of the rolls back over the cheese layer.
04 - In a small bowl, combine softened butter with garlic powder and chopped parsley. Mix until well blended, then spread the mixture evenly over the tops of the assembled rolls.
05 - For oven method: Bake uncovered for 12 to 15 minutes until cheese is fully melted and tops are golden brown. For skillet method: Cut into individual rolls and grill each side for 2 to 3 minutes until golden with melted cheese.
06 - Remove from heat and allow to cool for 2 minutes. Separate into individual mini sandwiches and serve warm.

# Expert Advice:

01 -
  • They disappear so fast you will seriously consider doubling the batch before even serving them.
  • The sweet Hawaiian roll paired with savory melted cheese is one of those flavor combinations that sounds weird until you taste it and wonder where it has been your whole life.
02 -
  • Do not separate the rolls before slicing because keeping them connected makes layering cheese infinitely easier and more even.
  • Watch the oven closely during the last three minutes because the transition from perfectly golden to slightly burnt happens shockingly fast.
03 -
  • Use a serrated knife and a gentle sawing motion when cutting the roll slab so you do not compress the fluffy bread.
  • Let the butter sit out for at least thirty minutes before making these because trying to spread cold butter on soft rolls is a one way ticket to frustration.
